How 4C Kinky Behaves

4C Kinky has tight, springy coils with significant shrinkage: the hair shrinks 40–70% when fully dry, which is accurate to natural 4C behaviour. In moisture, the coils tighten and retract; as the hair dries, the pattern elongates slightly. The texture is dense and full, with a high surface area that absorbs moisture readily. Porosity is medium-high, which means water-based products penetrate well. Heat tolerance is good, the hair can be stretched and blown out, but the curl pattern will relax with repeated high heat. For women who want to preserve the coil, stick to heatless methods: banding, threading, and finger coiling.

How to Care for 4C Kinky Extensions

Wash weekly with a moisturising sulfate-free shampoo, or co-wash between full wash days. Detangle gently with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while the hair is saturated with conditioner. Do not detangle dry. Apply the L.O.C. method (liquid, oil, cream) after washing to lock in moisture: water-based leave-in, then light oil, then a curl cream or butter. Air dry undisturbed for best coil definition. Deep condition every two weeks. Store in a satin bag with the hair loosely braided to maintain the coil structure and prevent matting.

How Many Bundles to Order

4C coils shrink 40–70% when dry, so this texture needs one more bundle than a straight or wave install at the same length. At 16"–18": order 3 bundles. At 20"–22": order 3 bundles. At 24"+: order 3–4 bundles. If you're using an HD Lace Closure or HD Lace Frontal, you can reduce by one bundle because the closure covers the crown. For a partial sew-in with natural leave-out, 2 bundles works at shorter lengths. 4C Kinky pairs well with Kinky Straight if you want the blend to work across different styling states.
